At first it looked like a bad April Fool's Day joke when WE received information that popular Classic FM breakfast co-presenter Mwalimu King'ang'i(Daniel Ndambuki) aka Churchill Abednego, had resigned.
But it turned out to be true:The rib-tickling comedian, thought to currently be the funniest man on radio, had indeed parted ways with Classic FM and its parent company,Radio Africa Limited.
When contacted, the multi-talented King'ang'i alias Philgonias, who presents the racy breakfast show alongside Maina Kageni, confirmed that he was no longer an employee of Classic FM."It is true I have left Classic after agreeing to disagree.I have set my eyes on scaling new heights,"he told us.Although he did not reveal his next destination, word has it that King'ang'i is set to join Nation Media Group(NMG),who are said to be in the process of launching a new radio station.
NMG poached Nyambane(Walter Mong'are) from Kiss FM two months ago.Sources intimated that King'ang'i had given "impractical demands" to his bosses. He wanted certain conditions fulfilled for his continued stay at the station. But the company could hear none of it,leading to the break-up.Radio Africa Limited General Manager,Martin Khafafa, says the presenter was holding the station hostage"The station opted to part ways amicably rather than accept to be held hostage by an individual's demands,"Khafafa wrote in an email made available to UEG.
King'ang'i,it was said, was trying to undermine the company, something they could not let continue."He was demanding a pay increment that would stop him taking up an offer with another station,"said our source. The bosses poured col water on his demands and instead accepted his resignation. It is said that his co-presenter,Maina Kageni, was earning more than three times what King'ang'i was getting, this while King'ang'i was the real star of the show, playing three personas live on air at the same time.
The irony is that initially it was Kiss FM,part of Radio Africa Limited, that had earned the reputation of engaging in poaching sprees with hefty salary offers that threatened other stations. It seems the shoe is now on the other foot.
